Deep Brain Stimulation Probes

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) implant surgery has been found to give great improvement in motor function and to reduce symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s. Our customer designed a directional stimulation probe which allows for targeted and controlled deep brain treatment.

Project Challenges And Solutions

With a diameter of 1.3 mm and a length of 400 mm, the DBS probe designed by our customer requires high-precision manual assembling. The Valtronic team was thus approached to assemble the probe and to fix the tiny MEMs around it. Valtronic also developed a specific process for the micro-encapsulation of the device.

Technical Details

  • Thin-film micro fabrication of microelectromechanical systems
  • Bonding technology processes
  • Micro-encapsulation techniques

Benefits

Starting with a proof of concept, Valtronic developed the whole assembling process for the implant. The team also designed and developed specific tools for the assembly and for the tests. Our customer benefits from Valtronic’s expertise for the production of the implant, and also for its continuous improvement as our team is working on further improvement of the development process.

About Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy is used in indications including Parkinson’s Disease. Thanks to MicroDBS products, neurosurgeons and neurologists will see reduced surgical and follow-up times, patients will benefit from a decrease in debilitating side effects, and payers will see a substantial reduction in the cost of patient care.
