A Smaller and Smarter Insulin Pump to Improve Lives of Diabetic Patients

Our customer developed a wearable miniaturized patch pump to provide continuous insulin infusion that is controlled directly by the patient with a dedicated smartphone device. Smaller, thinner and lighter than available insulin pumps, the new device incorporates double the amount of insulin (5mL), and is a nearly invisibly skin patch which can be worn for a 7-day treatment thus enabling substantial improvements in the treatment efficiency and the quality of life of diabetic patients.

Project Challenges and Solutions

This miniaturized insulin pump combines expertise in insulin delivery systems with Valtronic’s experience in manufacturing high-quality and miniaturized electronic devices. It is composed of a disposable pump-reservoir and of an electronic controller unit that can be used for up to two years. Valtronic designed and manufactured the PCB, selected and assembled all the components, including the manufacturing of the full controller and managed the supply chain. The designed PCB allows to integrate all the functionalities required by our customer and even more, so that additional ones could be included. These functionalities cover the operation of the pump unit and for the highly secured communication with the remote smartphone device.

Technical Details

Design and manufacturing of the PCB for this innovative pump composed of a disposable pump-reservoir and of an electronic controller unit. Our customer’s requirements were respected and even exceeded as the device could include more functionalities than initially planned. The close collaboration with our team allowed the production of the first prototypes two months only after the project started. This pump is still being produced and helps diabetic patients monitoring their insulin infusion with ultra-precision.
